Movie Analysis Hurt Locker - 1231 Words

The â€Å"Hurt Locker† by the filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow conveys several messages but I believe that the main message to the theme of the movie is presented at the very beginning of the film in the form of a quote. The quote that appears in the film states, â€Å"The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.† This quote comes from the book ‘War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,’ by Chris Hedges, a reporter for The New York Times. I believe this message is the main theme of this movie as depict through the character Sergeant First Class William James played by Jeremy Renner. The focus of this film established its ability to emulate the truth about the chaos and catastrophic events of not only war but also the addition to war. The dirty truth of this statement echoes throughout the movie. Most every scene communicated this one central message. Addiction is not limited to drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography, or sex but wars as well. Regardless of the drug of choice each share a similar fate. The destruction of what we love, people, children, sons and daughters, things/possessions, our principles, values and morals but most of all our sense self-worth and purpose in life. As with any addiction our thoughts become mental distortions of the experience suffered. An experience which only leads to behaviors/behavioral responses based our own personal experience to the devastating exposure to the drug.
